Computer Science students and the Lego Team from the Boyne Community School enjoyed a trip to Maynooth University.

The day began with a tour of the Russell Library, where our students and Lego Team members actively engaged with the fantastic collection of printed works dating back to the 15th century.

We were given a wonderful tour by Ms Jennifer O’Malley. The teachers and students were able to view an old handwritten manuscript from the Book of Hours collection along with Sturmy’s Navigation Guide for Mariners from 1669.

The students also enjoyed a guided tour of the Maynooth Science Museum given by Dr Neil Trappe. There we viewed a huge collection of scientific instrumentation from physics and chemistry.

After seeing the death mask of Daniel O’Connell we heard all about Nicholas Callan, an Irish priest, scientist, and inventor, who was a pioneer in the development of electrical science and the inventor of the induction coil.

To finish our trip we moved from the past to the future visiting the Robotics Lab in the Eolas Building. Here Professor John McDonald gave us a talk about robotics and we got to interact with the Sawyer robot and the Robotnik Summit XL unmanned ground vehicle.

All the students and teachers had a great day!

Many thanks to Ms McDonald & Mr Casey.
