We very much look forward to welcoming your son/daughter as part of our school community for the upcoming academic year. We hope to make the transition to Secondary School as smooth as possible for them and assist them in every way we can in embracing the new subjects and activities available to them in Boyne Community School. To assist in helping the transition there are three important events organised in the coming weeks. These are listed below;
Saturday 8 th February– 9:30am-12:30pm -Entrance Assessments, all incoming students
Monday 10 th of February – 6:30pm-7:30pm Parent Information Evening
Friday 14 th of February 9:00am-1:00pm – Student Subject Sampler Day, all incoming students
Each of these events are an important aspect of making the transition to Secondary School a successful one. We would encourage all students and parents to attend all relevant sessions and we look forward to meeting you then.
Entrance Assessments – February 8th It is extremely important that your son/daughter attends, as the information elicited from the assessment is used to ensure that the learning needs of all our students are catered for. This allows the school to put in place the relevant and appropriate supports for those who require them. The data is also used to ensure mixed ability classes. The test that the students will complete is the Cognitive Ability Test and will be completed on computers. Students are asked to bring pens, paper and earphones. A quick break will be provided halfway through the session. A snack and a drink may be a good idea to bring. Please be available to collect your child from 12pm on as the testing may not go on for all of the allocated time. All students are expected to be collected by a responsible adult afterwards.
Parent Information Evening – February 10th This meeting will give parents/guardians a good overview of life in Boyne Community School. It provides us with an opportunity to discuss various aspects of the Junior Cycle and to answer any questions parents have. At this meeting, we will also explain how students can use the information gained during the sampling day in selecting their option subjects for the next academic year. We will also be showing parents how they input the options onto VS ware. CLICK HERE TO GET THE SLIDES FROM THE NIGHT
Student Subject Sampler Day – February 14th On the day short classes will be arranged and students will attend each option subject over the course of the morning. There will be a short break around 11 am and students are advised to bring a small snack for this break. Students do not need to bring anything else with them on the day, all materials will be provided. The day will allow students to sample the following subjects; Art, Business, Engineering, French, German, Home Economics, Music, Technical Graphics and Wood Technology On the day students will be given a booklet with one page of information on each subject with a corresponding reflection piece to be completed at the end of each lesson. The hope is that students will leave with a realistic expectation of what that subject looks like in secondary school and how their talents and skills could best be pursued in relevant subject areas. Parents / Guardians will need to make arrangements for their son/daughter to be dropped at Boyne Community school at 9am and be collected at 1 pm. We have been in contact with all relevant Primary Schools and they are keen that as students transition to Secondary school they make informed and well-guided decisions.
